Feminismo 101: #RapeCulture (actualizado)

Feminism 101: #RapeCulture (updated and translated)

Author's note: I published this originally in a blog called Tea Time, wghen Brook Turner sentence reveales to be just six months for a rape case and wrote a letter making a victim out of himself. That just to give some context. Not, to this day, I updated all the entry and translated it, so it can reach more people. Please, if yoy know someone that promotes rape culture, share this!

Yes, Rape Cuture is a thing. Just a few days ago [when the article was first published in Spanish], a Stanford student was sentenced to serve only six months after raping a girl while they were both drunk. The name of the guy is Brook Turner and he wrote a letter where he excused himself and made the party culture of Stanford the responsible for his own acts. He playin the victim role, saying his life was ruined. The girl, the victim, answered him with a long letter reminding him that, even though everyone was drunk, he was the only one that decide to rape a girl and that, actually, he had ruined her life. Reading the letter was the thing that pushed me to write this. Rape Culture is something real, you can see it everyday.

What the hell Rape Culture means?

The term appeared with the feminists in the 70's, specifically in the United States, and it was used to describe all the ways in which society shames the victim of a sexual abuse. All the definitions, whereas more academic or more street-ish, are almost the same.

Emily Buchwald, athor of a book called Transformins a Rape Culture, defines the term in the following way:
[...] a complex set of beliefs that encourage male sexual aggression and supports violence against women. It is a society where violence is seen as sexy and sexuality as violent. In a rape culture, women perceive a continuum of threatened violence that ranges from sexual remarks to sexual touching to rape itself. A rape culture condones physical and emotional terrorism against women as the norm... In a rape culture both men and women assume that sexual violence is a fact of life, inevitable... However... much of what we accept as inevitable is in fact the expression of values and attitudes that can change.

It's also defined as an enviroment in which sexual violence against women is something that is normalized and the fear of suffering rape is something constant. Does it sound familiar to you? Are you women? Have you gone outside alone late at night? Have you carried your keys in your hands, ready to defend yourselves? Have you had your cellphone ready to call someone? Maybe you undestand abour what I'm talking. But if you don't know how Rape Culture transforms the society...

How does Rape Culture manifest itself?

The victim is shamed and made responsible when there's a sexual abuse. A lot of times, when there's rape cases, the guilt has the form of the victim's outfit, whether s/he wore miniskirt or jeans or dress; the guilt has also the form of teh victim's alcohol consumption, if s/he was alone, etcetera. The first filter for the victim is a lot of questions that are looking to shame them.

Harassment is tolerated. The most clear example is street harassment, that is trivialized or seen as something not important. It's dismissed with phrases like "it was just a cumpliment", but the truth is if the victim is uncomfotable, it's not just a cumpliment, is harassment.

Sexual agressions are dismissed as unimportant. Probably you have heard comments like: "I would rape her" (sometimes him), "You're not that beatiful to get raped". Suddenly, joke with rape is seen as irreverent, dark dark humor, instead of insulting ― exactly as it should be, because for many is just a joke, but for the victims is, maybe, the worst memory of their lives ― and it's seen as something acceptable. It is not.

Rape allegations are not seen seriously. In many cases, it is said that the victim is just seeking for attention, that it's not possible her/him have been raped. In many cases, women are questioned almost as criminals so they stop pursuing lawsuits.

It is assumed that men cannot be raped (or, in the other hand, that they would enjoy it). A long time ago I have a discussion with somenone (a man) that was saying that men couldn't be raped; he was telling me there was not a single victim. When I showed him the statistics in RAINN, just for the United States, he had the courage to tell me that it didn't matter, becase any man would enjoy something like that.

That are just examples on how Rape Culture appears in our daily life, the most representative. If you want to know something else, you can go to this webpage: What is rape culture?

Ejemplos de la cultura de la violación

Examples of Rape Culture

Did you believed that I was going to leave you like that? Of course not. To show you what I'm talking about, in case you still haven't got it, I'm going to tell you about concrete examples where we can see the rape culture represented. Every example (almost) has links to the source (in different languages, among english and spanish plus one in french), so you can see I'm not lying. Rape Culture is a thing, exists

What can I do so I don't promote the rape culture?

Maybe you've done something to promote #RapeCulture, although unintentionally, maybe you just ignored it, maybe you denied its existence, it doesn't matter. We all grew up in the patriarchy. You can still do a lot of things so you don't promote it anymore and here are a few suggestions.

Don't tell rape jokes. Don't laugh about rape jokes, they're not funny, specially for the victims. And even though you can say it's only humor, for the victim it is never humor. In fact, if you can, call them out.

Don't dismiss a victim's story. Don't say phrases like "she was asking for it", "she deserved it", "maybe she was a whore", etcetera. No victim deserves bad wishes like that. Also, the outfit doesn't matter or what the victim was doing, no one deserves being raped and no one was asking for it.

Escucha a las víctimas. Cree en su palabra.

Listen to the victims. Believe their word.

Support the victims. Don't judge them for their outfit, their habits or the circumstances. The victim are never the guilty one.

Condemn the rapists (and rapes). They are not poor men pshycologically ill and the circumstances didn't ruined their lifes. They, alone, ruined they're lifes (and sometimes not), the guilt is not in the alcohol, in the parties, let alone the victim.
